Why a Prison Book Club?

Book Club with Sarah just wrapped up our third book 🥹 we are voting on our next book Frid

Prison education and prison book clubs provide meaningful opportunities for growth, reflection, and human connection in environments that are often isolating. Educational programs in correctional settings have been linked to personal transformation, improved communication skills, and stronger pathways for successful reentry into society. Research on correctional education consistently shows that access to learning helps incarcerated individuals build confidence, develop critical thinking skills, and reconnect with a sense of purpose.

Book clubs create spaces for participants to engage in dialogue, examine different perspectives, and reflect on their experiences through literature. Studies of prison programming emphasize that reading groups foster empathy, self-awareness, and community-building while helping participants feel intellectually engaged and respected. Research from California prison programs also emphasizes how discussion-based learning environments can support personal development, healthy communication, and emotional growth.

Scholars and educators further note that prison libraries and literacy programs play a vital role in rehabilitation by expanding access to knowledge and fostering lifelong learning. Access to books and educational discussions allows incarcerated readers to imagine new possibilities for themselves while engaging in thoughtful conversations that strengthen both individual and collective understanding. Additional scholarship and research informing this work can be found through California State University ScholarWorks, ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global, and Critical Survey (Berghahn Journals)
